A militant Islamic Group that took control of a large territory of the desertic regions of Syria and Iraq during the Syrian Civil War and the War in Iraq (2013-2017), as well as controlling scattered territories in several countries of the Middle East. The territories in Syria and Iraq were lost by 2019.

    1. Arab Spring


    Initially a series of anti-government protests and revolts across the Arab world, it soon evolved into a series of wars. The wars caused by the revolts are sometimes referred to as the Arab Winter.

    1.1.Libyan Civil Wars

    Were two civil wars in Libya that started with an uprising against the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

    1.1.1.Libyan Civil War (2014-present)

    Was a civil war in Libya involving several factions, but later evolving in a conflict mainly between the House of Representatives in Tobruk and the Government of National Accord in Tripoli. Despites the existence of an interim unity government since 2021, territorial factual control remains divided.

  • October 2014: Radical militants in control of the Libyan city of Derna joined ISIL, thus making Derna the first city outside Syrian and Iraq to be occupied by ISIL.
  • February 2015: The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant took over the town of Nofaliya.
  • February 2015: On 13 February, gunmen affiliated with the ISIL seized government buildings and radio and television stations in Sirte. These force reportedly issued an ultimatum demanding other military entities evacuate the city by the dawn of Sunday (15 February).
  • March 2015: Military forces associated with the Tripoli-based government reportedly recaptured Nofaliya from ISIL.
  • May 2015: Islamic State fighters captured the Qurdabiya air base south of Sirte after Tripoli aligned troops withdrew from the area.
  • July 2015: Al-Wushka, a little town 35 kilometers east of Abu Grain, was taken over by the Libyan branch of ISIL, without any resistance from the militant forces that control western Libya.
  • July 2015: Clashes erupt between the Shura Council of Mujahideen in Derna and ISIL in June 2015, with ISIL being expelled from the city by late July 2015.
  • January 2016: ISIL again entered Derna in December 2015.
  • January 2016: ISIL takeover of the Libyan city of Bin Jawad.
  • February 2016: The Libyan Army managed to capture Marisa port which was a key lifeline for terrorists in the city to get supplies from the city of Misrata.
  • May 2016: ISIL militants staged a preemptive offensive against GNA-allied forces in Abu Grein.
  • May 2016: GNA military forces recaptured Abu Grein from ISIL.
  • May 2016: Operation Al-Bunyan Al-Marsoos forces reported the capture of the Sirte power station and also its advance on the town of Jarif to the south of Sirte.

  • June 2016: By May 2016, the Libyan National Army controlled at least 90% of the City of Benghazi.

  • 1.2.Syrian Civil War

    Is an ongoing civil war in Syria between the government (the Syrian Arab Republic) and several factions. The civil war started in 2011 with protests, part of the wider Arab Spring, caused by discontent with the Syrian government.

  • 1.3.4.Northern Iraq offensive (August 2014)

    Was a military offensive by the Islamic State in northern Iraq, during the War in Iraq (2013-2017).

  • August 2014: ISIL captured the town of Wana between Zumar and Mosul.
  • August 2014: Battle of Zumar.
  • August 2014: ISIL captured the strategic town of Makhmour.
  • August 2014: On 7 August, ISIL took control of Qaraqosh, the largest Christian town of Iraq, 30 km southeast of Mosul and 60 km west of Erbil, Karamlish, 5 km from Qaraqosh, Tal Keif, Batnaya, just north of Mosul, and Bartella, just east of Mosul.
  • August 2014: ISIL had seized the Mosul Dam, 40 km northwest of Mosul on the Tigris river.
  • August 2014: Encouraged by American airstrikes, Kurdish Peshmerga forces retook the strategic towns of Gwer and Makhmour.
  • August 2014: On 15 August, ISIL moved into the village Kocho.
  • August 2014: Battle for Mosul Dam.

  • 1.3.5.Second Anbar Offensive

  • April 2015: On 23 April, Iraqi government forces secured the old road of Al-Karmah and three days later retook part of the city Al-Karmah.

  • 1.3.8.Anbar campaign (2015-2016)

    Was a military campaign launched by the Iraqi Armed Forces and their allies aimed at recapturing areas of the Anbar Governorate held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

  • 1.3.8.1.Battle of Hīt

    Was a battle between the Iraqi government forces and the islamic State for the control of the area of Hit, during the War in Iraq (2013-2017).

  • March 2016: The Iraqi Army recaptured the town of Kabisa.
  • April 2016: Iraqi forces fully recaptured the town of Hīt, along with the remainder of the Hīt District.

  • 1.3.9.Mosul offensive (2016)

    Was a major military campaign launched by the Iraqi Government forces with allied militias, the Kurdistan Regional Government, and international forces to retake the city of Mosul from the Islamic State (ISIL), during the War in Iraq (2013-2017).

  • June 2016: The Iraqi Army captured Hajj Ali along with the villages of Khirab Jabri and Kaproki.
  • July 2016: The Iraqi Army recaptured Qayyarah Airfield West in Nineveh province from ISIL.
  • August 2016: Iraqi forces in collaboration with Kurdish forces captured four villages which were Tal Hamid, Qarqasha, Abzakh and Qura Takh located near Mosul.
  • September 2016: Shirqat was fully captured by pro-government forces.
  • October 2016: ISIL re-entered Shirqat after assaulting it from two axes. The group recaptured the mayor's office, the center of the district and the entertainment city area.
  • October 2016: Iraqi Army regained full control of the city of Shirqat.
  • July 2017: Battle of Mosul (2016-17).

  • 1.3.10.2017 Western Nineveh offensive

    Was a military offensive by Kurdish forces against the Islamic State in the Nineveh Governorate, during the War in Iraq (2013-2017).

  • April 2017: PMU announced during the afternoon of 26 April that they had captured the ruins of the ancient city of Hatra.
  • May 2017: The PMF captured the Sahl Sinjar Air Base.
  • May 2017: The PMF announced that it had captured 7 villages including four villages to south of al-Qairawan, Tal Qasab, 2 villages to the north of al-Qairawan.
  • May 2017: The PMF seized the strategic town of Qayrawan and a number of villages.
  • May 2017: The town of Al-Hadar was captured by Kurdish forces.
  • May 2017: PMU announced that they had recaptured the town of al-Qahtaniya.
  • June 2017: More than 500 PMF fighters captured al-Ba'aj.

  • 1.3.11.2017 Western Iraq campaign

    Was a major military campaign launched by the Iraqi Government against the Islamic State (ISIL), during the War in Iraq (2013-2017).

  • September 2017: Iraqi forces free Akashat from the Islamic State.
  • September 2017: Iraqi forces advance after the liberation of Akashat from the Islamic State.
  • October 2017: Iraqi general Lt Gen Abdul Amir Yarallah said they had cleared the village of Umm al-Waz, as well as the Saad (H2) airbase and nearby Husseiniyat area from IS forces.
  • October 2017: By 31 October, Iraqi forces had reached the edge of al-Qaim.
  • October 2017: Iraqi forces completely liberate Obaidi area in eastern Al-Qa’em
  • November 2017: ISIL loses al-Qaim in Iraq and Deir Az Zor in Syria.
  • November 2017: Iraqi forces seized several villages from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in an operation to retake Rawa
  • November 2017: Iraqi security forces recaptured up to 45 villages as part of a large-scale military operation to dislodge Islamic State (IS) militants from their hideouts in the desert in western Iraq.
  • December 2017: The Iraqi army conquers the remaining territories controlled be the Islamic State in Iraq.

  • 1.3.12.Western Anbar offensive (September 2017)

    Was an offensive launched by the Iraqi Army to recapture western Anbar from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, during the War in Iraq (2013-2017).

  • September 2017: Iraqi military announced that it had captured Akashat.
  • September 2017: Yarallah from JOC announced that Iraqi forces had completely captured Anah.

  • 1.3.13.2017 Hawija offensive

    Was an offensive launched by the Iraqi Army against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, during the War in Iraq (2013-2017).

  • September 2017: On 22 September, Iraqi forces liberated approximately 140 square kilometers of territory north of the district of Hawija from the Kirkuk Governorate.
  • September 2017: On 24 September, the Iraqi forces had liberated all of the areas north of the Al-Zab River, along with some other areas west of the Tigris River and in the northern Makhoul Mountains.
  • September 2017: On 29 September Iraqi forces recaptured the town of al-Abbassi from the Islamic State.
  • October 2017: On 5 october the Iraqi forces took control of the city of Hawija.
  • October 2017: Hawija and surrounding regions conquered by government forces.
  • October 2017: The Iraqi army conquers the areas surrounding the city of Hawija.

  • 1.4.Yemeni Civil War (2015-present)

    Is an ongoing civil war in Yemen between the government and the Houthis (an Islamist political and armed organization that emerged from Saada Governorate in North Yemen), as well as involving several local, in some case secessionist, forces.

  • January 2017: Mulla is taken back by government forces.
